Three days have passed, and Eva hasn’t replied to my message. And I’ve surprised myself by being okay with that. Because at least she didn’t come back and tell me not to bother ever contacting her again. And that’s gotta be a good thing. It means I’ve got something to look forward to when I get home. I’ve got something to hope for.

And in the meantime, I’m keeping myself busy.

I’ve already established that Max’s idea isn’t gonna fly. The structure of the building won’t withstand another story being added, not without major underpinning, and I don’t think he’ll wanna get into that. However, I have come up with another idea, which I’m working on, and which I hope he might go for, even though it’s not quite what he had in mind. It won’t mean closing the hotel while the work is being carried out, and it might just solve the kitchen problem too. If I can get it right.

Eli asked about my call with Eva the next morning over breakfast, and I told him what had happened. He said he thought I was crazy, and that I should have been up front about how I feel.

“Call her back,” he urged. “Tell her the truth.”

I shook my head. “No. I can’t tell her that over the phone, and besides, we’ve agreed we’re gonna talk when we get home.”

“And you think it’s a good idea to wait that long?”

“I don’t have any choice. She made it clear she doesn’t wanna talk to me right now, so this is my best shot. And I’m gonna take it. Even if I do have to wait.”

“Why doesn’t she wanna talk to you now?” He frowned at me.

I didn’t feel like explaining to him that I’d left her, without saying goodbye, or that she was understandably mad with me for that. Her accusation that I was good at forgetting things would have made that obvious, even if she hadn’t already admitted it. So I just said, “It’s complicated. But if she needs some time, then she can have it. I owe her that much.” And more.

Now all I’ve gotta do is get through the next couple of weeks, and then I’ll be able to see Eva again. And when I do, I’m gonna tell her the truth. And that means I’m gonna tell her I’m in love with her. Because I am. Completely. So, I’m gonna put my heart out there… and hope to God she doesn’t break it.
